The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
