Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
