"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently feature them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global audience.

However Haim will forever be their top priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
