2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Follows Poor Reception

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct vision.

The president noted that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After several months of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

His management and experience in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, risks, and challenges that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as production progresses.
